Why am I Here?
This is the question. Everything else stems from or leads to this point. I’m a big believer in the notion that we each have a purpose. I think all of our greatest problems can be traced back to ignorance or willful denial of our inherent job descriptions. I talk about this sort of thing an awful lot, as you know.
If you believe you’re here for a reason, it’s natural to want to...

(or When to use Instant Messaging part two: the revenge)
almost never
please see #1 above
As with the earlier article, the problem with immediate communication is that the folks you’re addressing to have to stop doing whatever they were doing and start working on you instead. There are certainly times when this is appropriate, but here’s when it is not:
When somebody is working on...

When to use Instant Messaging
Never.
Well, almost never. When you IM (or SMS, or call) somebody, they have to stop whatever they are doing and start doing whatever you are doing. If you are okay with that, you have my permission to send that chat message. If not, send an email. Here are some examples:
“My dog is on fire, and you know where the bucket of water is!”
“Sometime today can you think about...

Get Dirty
Like the Golden Rule says, “do unto others once you’re certain that what you do will be well received, that you will be compensated appropriately, and after you’ve had a good nap.” Oh, wait. It doesn’t say that at all. In fact, you’d be hard pressed to find any quote in any wisdom literature extolling the virtues of sitting on your ass.
So why is it that our...

Well, this didn’t take long. Exactly one day after the elections, the Navy was in Congress asking for permission to buy 10 new warships, at a cost of $5 billion.

Android Question for the #hivemind
So What I REALLY need is a way to seamlessly sync text files with Dropbox on my Android. So far, it can’t be done. Here’s my setup:
On my Mac, I have Notational Velocity set up to sync with a folder on Dropbox. If I’m writing something longer-form, I also have WriteRoom ( http://www.hogbaysoftware.com/products/writeroom) set up to read to/write from the same folder. Everything’s searchable,...

Eye Doctor: So, Mr. Randolph, how do you like the new contacts?
Me: They're great. Really comfortable. I DID notice that print is a little fuzzy when I read now.
Eye Doctor: You're old.

Get a frickin’ case. Sheesh.
Dio or Ozzy?
A great many religious systems advocate the setting aside of one day a week for spiritual pursuits. Perhaps you’ve heard of this.
While I do go to church regularly, I have to admit that I’d not placed a lot of stock in the idea of honoring the sabbath per se. I think a lot of the problems and frustrations we face have their roots in the notion of segregation — some good people...

No ideas are sometimes the best
“If I’d asked my customers what they wanted, they’d have said a faster horse.” — Henry Ford
You may be a genius, but the ideas you have about the future are happening in the context of what you’ve understood about the past, whatever emotional baggage and filters you have going on in the present, and, possibly, what you just had for lunch. This is fine, of...
